Cheryl Cole and Piers Morgan
Cheryl Cole gave an exclusive interview with Piers Morgan, 23rd October, discussing her Malaria ordeal, recent divorce and her rise to fame :
Cheryl Cole emphasised how she had been avoiding any interviews with journalists until now, as she did not want to discuss her personal life with the media, it was not a “soap”. Probing questions from Piers about Cheryl’s marriage with Ashley Cole and the traumatic experience of malaria caused upset. The majority of the interview saw Cheryl fighting back the tears and speaking highly of everyone, including Ashley Cole. “Part of me will always love him”.
Cheryl Cole also offered an ‘exclusive’ interview for Guardian readers, but a similar article could also be read in The Sun newspaper.
So what do we take from this exclusive interview? Was it a one-off, exclusive interview, to try to bury all of the rumours that the public have read over the past few years about Cheryl Cole and Ashley, about malaria and about her rise to fame? Was it the chance for Cheryl to share her experience of surviving malaria. Had her new-found health urged her to face the media once and for all. The last suggestion is for the cynics amongst us, or is it simply a coincidence that Cheryl Cole has a new album being released on 1st November 2010?
The Killer Inside Me
After reading Charlie Higson’s top 10 horror books article in ‘The Guardian’, I decided to purchase The Killer Inside Me, by Jim Thompson.
Based in a small town in Texas the novel plays upon the stereotype of a small town, where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Cleverly, Thompson uses this to his advantage and creates a chilling read with the main character, a man in high authority, Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford being a psychopathic murderer under the noses of everyone in the town. His violent and disturbing character is hidden by a well presented facade of good manners and commitment to his position.
The vivid use of language by Thompson successfully conveys the dark thoughts and feelings of Lou Ford. The novel beautifully shows the transition of evil within Ford affecting others around him. The acts Ford commits are gruesome and almost unbearable at times, but the scenes are cleverly constructed and written, leaving the reader in suspense.
I feel the novel itself represents corruption amongst society and the ill judgements made of others. Although, the theme and content is very graphic and violent, Thompson manages to capture a character that leaves the hairs standing on the back of your neck.
Reading a different novel genre has proved to be enlightening. It is a good way to expand your vocabulary and even though the thriller genre is not for everyone, I recommend this book for a change of reading.
The novel was recently adapted for film this year [2010] :
My top five websites
The internet is a very useful medium (platform) for finding everything and anything you could possibly want or need in life. Whittling down my favourite websites to only a select five was a difficult decision but rest assured these are some of the finest sites the internet has to offer:
1. boohoo.com – Boohoo offers the latest fashion at affordable prices. The site navigation is easy and the layout is attractive so finding the perfect outfit is made simple. The clothes sold on the website are for women and young girls, out of most of the current fashion websites this site is ideal for students living on a budget.
2. readitswapit.co.uk – Reading is a passion of mine and I usually find a new book in a high street charity shop. However, the internet has transformed my ‘environmentally friendly’ way of recycling books and has created an amazing website to swap books with other fellow book lovers. All you have to pay is the postage. Brilliant.
3. guardian.co.uk – As a Communication and Media student I am always a keen reader of the Guardian’s ”media section’. The paper itself is an interesting read and with numerous categories there is always a thought-provoking article to read. The website is accessible for all and offers sections for readers engagement (comments and forums).
4. imdb.com – This website is brilliant for answering, so “Who was that actor?” or “What year did that film get released?” IMDB gives user-friendly ratings and summaries of various films and television shows whilst also supplying vast amounts of information about the actors/actresses involved. Bookmark this website!
5. bbc.co.uk/radio1 -Radio one is the perfect website to keep up to date with the latest songs, artists or bands. On a Sunday you can listen and watch the countdown of the top forty singles and the website provides DJ’s information and playlists of shows. If you miss a show, podcasts are available. Radio one is also very informative and up to date with the latest news, events and reviews.
